Retribution

W aking with a start, I hold back a whimper, not wanting to worry the guys. I really don’t want to have to explain that I’ve had another bad dream. Instead, I climb over Rehan so that I can get out of bed.

“Going somewhere?” Rehan asks, his hand going to my wrist. The touch is gentle, and he runs soothing circles on my skin.

“Just getting some water,” I tell him softly, trying not to wake up the others.

“I could go,” he offers, beginning to sit up.

“No need.” I lean down to kiss him before pulling away and making my way downstairs.

The orphanage is quiet. Finally. I went to bed a few hours ago, thinking that I’d get my first proper night’s sleep in days. The children had finally moved into their new rooms and weren’t living on top of each other. They had been so excited to have their own rooms that they hadn’t even bothered to bicker over who could have the biggest. That might have something to do with how Juniper’s spell worked so well that all the rooms seem to be the exact same size. I haven’t exactly gotten my measuring tape out to check, but I have a sneaking suspicion that the extension is perfectly symmetrical.

That quiet was wasted though because I only had to go and have another bad dream. They’re becoming a bit of a regular occurrence. Every night, in fact. Each time it starts differently, but the end is always the same: Rossi leaning over little Luna’s crib with a knife.

“Are you alright, love?” Rehan asks from the kitchen doorway just as I’m downing a glass of water.

“Just a little nightmare,” I admit.

He’s across the room, and his arms are around me within seconds. I sink into his warmth, allowing myself to feel momentarily safe.

“Want to tell me about it?”

“Not really.”

Placing the glass down on the counter, I turn around so I’m facing him. Wrapping my arms around his neck, I pull him closer so I can kiss him.

Our lips meet and for a moment, I’m able to forget that I’ve just had a nightmare. So long as it’s only a nightmare it’s easy to forget, but I have a horrible feeling that my recent nightmares are not just dreams. And that knowledge is distracting. A few minutes into the kiss, I’m pulling back.

“I…” I start. “I’m sorry. I’m scared.”

“The prophecy?” He asks.

“Yeah. That and my dreams.”

“The dreams? They’re that bad?”

I’ve been playing them down, trying not to worry them.

“It’s the baby and Rossi,” I tell him before going on to tell him everything that I’ve seen in my dreams. The words probably don’t come out right. All muddled together. But he nods his head as if he’s following me.

“Why didn’t you tell us?” Comes a voice from the doorway.

Turning, I see the others looking at me. Here we go. We’re about to go through the whole overprotective thing again. Except I don’t think it’s me that needs protecting this time.

My hand goes to my stomach.
